What's New with Food
As the temperatures drop and the Fall winds begin to blow, in our house it is soup season. My family knows that on the most blustery autumn days, soup is always on the stove. Soup is warm and nourishing comfort food. I like to think of soup-making as a great way to nutrition pack a meal--it is an easy way to sneak lots of extra vegetables into your family's diet. Below is one of our Fall favorites.

Did you know that yoga not only suppresses our stress response, but stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system? This system helps to calm us down and restore balance and harmony after a stressful event. Heart rate and blood pressure are lowered, and blood is directed to the endocrine, digestive and lymphatic systems to detoxify the effects of the stress.. This is our body's natural means of healing itself.
How to Take a Yoga Class (And What to Expect During your Class)
(For the Beginner and the Curious)
- Arrive on time, or even a little early. Allow time to settle in and relax before beginning practice. If you are late, be mindful as you come into the studio space.
- Be respectful of space. Try to keep any props you might need close to your mat.
- Come to class clean.
- Dress appropriately and comfortably.
- Refrain from the use of heavy perfumes. Some individuals are highly sensitive to
fragrances.
- We play hard. Expect to sweat. At least a little.
- Try not to eat for two hours prior to your class. Twists and bends are much more
comfortable on an empty stomach!
- Be hydrated.
- Relax. Have fun. Dont worry about how your practice looks compared to that of others. This is your practice.
- Respect your own limits. Expect to be comfortably uncomfortable at times during your practice. If something doesnt feel good, dont do it. Your instructor will help you with modifications of postures to make them appropriate for your current health and level of fitness.
- Yoga is a hands-on practice. Your teacher will adjust your postures and alignment. If you prefer not to be touched, please tell your teacher prior to class.
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old system of healing. The word is Sanskrit and in translation means ayur (life) and veda (knowledge). The science of Ayurveda guides us to develop our innate ability to know ourselves, body, mind and soul. Ayurveda focuses on the wellness of the entire being-- body, mind and spirit. Ayurveda deals with all aspects of the human being. Simple and nourishing lifestyle changes facilitate the process of healing both physical and emotional imbalances, and develop each individual's ability to become their own best healer. Ayurveda addresses the root causes of imbalance in the body, imbalances that, when left untreated, can lead to dis-ease, or illness, in the body.
What is special about Ayurveda?
Ayurveda looks at each individual as a unique balance of the five elements: ether, air, fire, water and earth. Rather than attempting to fix microcasms of the body, Ayurveda examines the human as one holistic unit that can fall in and out of balance. Rather than masking symptoms, Ayurveda searches for the root cause of the problem and there begins the healing process. Ayurveda is at its finest when used as a means of prevention. Disease is viewed as a state of imbalance in the body and treatment includes simple and natural remedies, including nutritional modifications, yoga, pranayama (breathwork), meditation, herbal therapies, healing and stabilizing daily routines and specialized body treatments to soothe, nourish and restore body, mind and spirit..

Massage therapy can be a powerful ally to your healthcare regimen. Experts estimate that 90% of health problems are stress related. Nothing ages a person faster, both internally and externally, than stress. While it is impossible to totally eliminate anxiety and pressure from everyday living, massage can help manage some of that stress. Massage therapy does this by decreasing anxiety, enhancing sleep quality, and increasing concentration, circulation, and energy. Research continues to show the enormous benefits of massage which range from helping with chronic diseases, neurological disorders, soft tissue injuries, to alleviating tensions of everyday life. Taking part in a regularly scheduled massage can play a huge part in how healthy you will be with each passing year. Consider massage appointments a necessary part of your preventative health and wellness plan.
Our licensed massage therapist, Kim Keiler has over 18 years experience.
